NetNewsWire is an RSS reader for Mac, iPhone and iPad. It pulls new articles from the blogs and news sites you follow and keeps track of what you have read.

It reads RSS, Atom and JSON Feed. You can keep feeds on your Mac only, or sync them through iCloud, Feedbin, Feedly, BazQux, Inoreader, NewsBlur, The Old Reader or FreshRSS. The All Unread and Today smart feeds collect new items, and you can star articles, sort feeds into folders and hide what you have already read. A Safari extension adds feeds from the page you are on.

The Mac app has single-key keyboard shortcuts, a Reader view, article themes, multiple windows, a customizable toolbar and AppleScript support. OPML import and export let you move a feed list in from another reader or back out.

NetNewsWire is free and open source under the MIT licence. It is made by Brent Simmons and community contributors. The Mac version needs macOS 15 or later and runs natively on Apple Silicon.

Frequently asked questions

Is NetNewsWire free?

Yes. NetNewsWire is free on Mac, iPhone and iPad, with no in-app purchases or subscription. The project even asks people not to send money.

Is NetNewsWire safe and open source?

Yes. The full source code is on GitHub under the MIT licence. Feeds are fetched by the app itself, and you only connect a sync service if you choose one.

How do I install NetNewsWire on Mac?

Download the Mac app from netnewswire.com and move it to Applications. With Homebrew, run brew install --cask netnewswire. The iPhone and iPad version is on the App Store.

What macOS version does NetNewsWire need?

The current Mac version needs macOS 15 or newer and is Apple Silicon native. Older versions for earlier macOS releases are linked from the NetNewsWire website.

How does NetNewsWire compare to Reeder?

Both are native Apple RSS readers. Reeder is a commercial app. NetNewsWire is free and open source, syncs with iCloud and services like Feedbin, Feedly and Inoreader, and focuses on plain feed reading.

Can I move my feeds from another RSS reader?

Yes. Export an OPML file from your old reader and import it in NetNewsWire. You can export your NetNewsWire subscriptions to OPML the same way.
