Audacity
Free audio editor for Mac for recording, cutting and cleaning up voice, podcasts and music.
Audacity is a multi-track audio editor and recorder. You can record from a microphone or audio interface, import existing files, then cut, arrange and process them on a timeline.
Version 4 rebuilt the interface on Qt with sharp high-DPI rendering. Clips can now be selected, grouped and moved together, and you split them by holding S and clicking. Toolbars and panels can dock or float, and layouts save as Workspaces, with Modern, Classic and Music included. Light, dark and high-contrast themes are built in, and each track header shows live playback and recording meters.
Effects can be applied directly or in realtime. On the Mac, Audacity hosts Audio Units, VST3 and Nyquist plugins. Projects now use the .aup4 format, and older .aup3 projects open and convert without changing the original. Version 4.0.1 added Export multiple, which saves each track or labelled region to its own file. A few Audacity 3 features, including MIDI tracks, the Mixer, macros and play-at-speed, are not in 4.0 yet, and Audacity 3 releases are still available from the older versions page.
Audacity is free and released under GPL-3.0. Mac downloads come as universal, Apple Silicon and Intel builds. Optional cloud saving through audio.com is offered, but you do not need an account to use the editor. It suits podcasters, voice-over work, students and musicians who want a capable editor without a subscription.
Frequently asked questions
Is Audacity free?
Yes. Audacity is free with no paid edition. Cloud saving on audio.com and plugins on MuseHub are optional extras offered alongside it.
Is Audacity safe and open source?
Audacity is open source under GPL-3.0, and its code is on GitHub. Official downloads come from audacityteam.org and the GitHub releases page, with SHA-256 checksums to verify the file.
How do I install Audacity?
Download the universal, Apple Silicon or Intel .dmg from audacityteam.org and drag the app to Applications, or run brew install --cask audacity in Terminal. Version 4 installs as Audacity 4 in your Applications folder.
What macOS version does Audacity need?
The Mac download page says Audacity is tested on macOS 14 and 15 and may work on older releases. It does not give a firm minimum for version 4.
How does Audacity compare to Adobe Audition?
Adobe Audition is a professional audio workstation sold through a Creative Cloud subscription, with multitrack, waveform and spectral editing tools. Audacity is free and covers recording, multi-track editing, effects and plugins. People who need Audition's full restoration and post-production toolset may still prefer it.
Can I open my Audacity 3 projects in Audacity 4?
Yes. Audacity 4 opens .aup3 projects and converts them to .aup4 without changing the original file. A converted project cannot be saved back to .aup3, and older .aup projects can be imported.
