eqMac is a system-wide equalizer for macOS. It processes all the audio your Mac plays, so one EQ setting applies to music, video and calls on whatever output you use.

The free version includes a Basic EQ with bass, mids and treble, an Advanced EQ with 10 fixed bands, AutoEQ headphone presets, and a volume booster that goes above 100 percent. It also adds volume and balance control for every output, including HDMI displays. You can hide features you do not use to keep the window simple.

eqMac Pro adds an Expert EQ with unlimited bands and a spectrum analyzer, a per-app volume mixer, spatial audio, separate left and right EQ, and Audio Unit hosting. Pro is a subscription from $3 a month or $30 a year, or a $40 lifetime license for one Mac.

eqMac is made by Bitgapp. Its audio driver runs in user space rather than as a kernel extension. The code on GitHub is Apache-2.0, but it matches version 1.3.2, and newer releases are built from a private fork. eqMac needs macOS 10.13 or later and runs on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.

Frequently asked questions

Is eqMac free?

The core app is free, including the Basic and Advanced EQ, volume boost and balance. eqMac Pro is paid, as a subscription from $3 a month or $30 a year, or a $40 lifetime license for one Mac.

Is eqMac safe and open source?

Part of it. The GitHub repository is Apache-2.0 and holds the free version of the code up to v1.3.2. Releases after that come from a private fork, so the current app is not fully open source. Its driver captures system audio in user space instead of the kernel.

How do I install eqMac?

Download it free from eqmac.app, or run brew install --cask eqmac in Terminal.

What macOS version does eqMac need?

eqMac needs macOS 10.13 or later and supports Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.

How does eqMac compare to Boom 3D?

Boom 3D is a paid app from Global Delight with 3D surround sound, a 31-band equalizer, a volume booster, per-app volume and internet radio, with a 15-day trial. eqMac's free tier gives you a 10-band EQ and volume boost at no cost. Per-app volume and spatial audio need eqMac Pro.

Can eqMac boost volume above the maximum?

Yes. The volume booster in the free version lets you go above 100 percent. eqMac also adds volume and balance control to HDMI outputs.
