Mos is a menu bar utility that smooths mouse wheel scrolling on macOS. A regular wheel moves in coarse steps. Mos takes over the wheel events and turns them into smooth scrolling that feels closer to a trackpad.

You can tune the step size, speed gain and duration, or turn on a mode that simulates a trackpad. Vertical and horizontal scrolling each have their own smoothing and reverse settings, and the mouse and trackpad are handled separately. Hotkeys can speed up scrolling, swap the scroll axis or pause smoothing. Each app can follow the global settings or have its own. Mouse buttons can be bound to actions such as Mission Control, switching Spaces, screenshots, keyboard shortcuts, opening an app or file, or running a script. Logitech devices on Bolt, Unifying or Bluetooth are supported through HID++.

It suits people who use a mouse with a Mac and find the default wheel scrolling jumpy, and anyone who wants extra mouse buttons to do something useful.

Mos is made by Caldis. The code is on GitHub under the Creative Commons BY-NC 4.0 licence, which allows sharing and changes but not commercial use. Mos needs Accessibility permission to read and rewrite scroll events. It supports macOS 10.13 and later and has supported Apple silicon Macs natively since version 3.3.1.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mos free?

Yes. Mos is free to download from GitHub and Homebrew, with no paid version.

Is Mos safe and open source?

The full source is public on GitHub. The project calls itself open source, but its licence is CC BY-NC 4.0, which bans commercial use, so it is not an OSI-approved open source licence. The developer asks that nobody upload Mos to the App Store, so get it from GitHub releases or Homebrew.

How do I install Mos?

Download the zip from the GitHub releases page, unzip it and move Mos.app to Applications. With Homebrew, run brew install --cask mos, and update later with brew upgrade --cask mos. On first launch, allow Mos under Accessibility in System Settings.

What macOS version does Mos need?

Mos supports macOS 10.13 High Sierra and later, on both Intel and Apple silicon Macs.

How does Mos compare to SmoothScroll?

SmoothScroll is a paid app for smooth scrolling on Mac. Mos does the same core job for free and adds per-app profiles, separate settings for each scroll axis, and mouse button bindings.

Can I reverse the mouse wheel but keep natural scrolling on the trackpad?

Yes. Mos treats the mouse and trackpad separately and has its own reverse option for vertical and horizontal scrolling, so you can flip the wheel direction without changing how the trackpad scrolls.
