KeePassXC is an offline password manager for Mac, Windows and Linux. It keeps your logins, notes, attachments and one-time codes in a single encrypted database file, and nothing is stored on a remote server.

Databases use the KDBX format, so they also open in other KeePass-compatible apps. Entries sit in groups, and search accepts advanced patterns. The built-in generator makes random passwords or passphrases. KeePassXC also stores TOTP codes, types logins into other apps with Auto-Type, and supports YubiKey and OnlyKey challenge-response. The browser extension fills logins and passkeys in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Chromium and Tor Browser.

Power users get the keepassxc-cli command line tool, an SSH agent, field references between entries and database reports that check password health and Have I Been Pwned. Version 2.8.0 moved to Qt 6, made keyboard shortcuts configurable, added remote database sync through external tools and lets Quick Unlock on macOS use your device password when Touch ID is not available. You can import from 1Password, Bitwarden, Proton Pass, KeePass 1 and CSV files.

KeePassXC is free, with no subscription, ads or account, and is licensed under GPL version 2 or 3. It suits people who want to decide where their password file lives, for example in a folder they already sync. The current build needs macOS 12 or later, with separate Apple Silicon and Intel downloads.

Frequently asked questions

Is KeePassXC free?

Yes. KeePassXC is free with no subscription or paid tier. The project accepts donations.

Is KeePassXC safe and open source?

It is open source on GitHub under GPL version 2 or 3. Your data is encrypted at rest, and the database only leaves your Mac if you put it in a synced folder yourself. Security fixes, including ones reported by outside researchers, are listed in each release's notes.

How do I install KeePassXC?

Download the Apple Silicon or Intel .dmg from keepassxc.org and drag the app to Applications, or run brew install --cask keepassxc in Terminal. The cask also adds the keepassxc-cli command.

What macOS version does KeePassXC need?

The current release needs macOS 12 or later. For macOS 11 and older, the project points to MacPorts.

How does KeePassXC compare to 1Password?

1Password is a paid subscription service that syncs your vault through its own servers, with a 14-day free trial. KeePassXC is free and keeps everything in a local file, so syncing between devices is up to you. KeePassXC can import 1Password data directly, which makes switching easier.

Can KeePassXC fill passwords in my browser?

Yes. Turn on browser integration in KeePassXC and install its extension for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Chromium or Tor Browser. The extension can also save and use passkeys.
