MonitorControl
Free brightness control for Mac that sets external monitor brightness and volume from your keyboard.
MonitorControl changes the brightness and volume of external displays from a Mac. You can use the sliders in its menu bar menu or the keyboard, including the brightness and media keys on Apple keyboards, and it shows the native macOS on-screen display when you do.
For most monitors it uses DDC/CI to change the real backlight, contrast and volume over USB-C, DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI or VGA. Apple displays and built-in screens use Apple's own protocol. Where hardware control is not possible, such as most TVs, DisplayLink docks, AirPlay and Sidecar, it falls back to software dimming. It can combine hardware and software dimming to go below a display's minimum brightness, dim all the way to black, copy brightness changes from the built-in screen's ambient light sensor to an external display, and set every display with one slider. Custom shortcuts live under Keyboard in Settings, and Show advanced settings unlocks more options.
It suits anyone with a desktop monitor whose brightness buttons are awkward to reach. Some ports do not pass DDC: the built-in HDMI port on the 2018 Intel Mac mini, on M1 Macs and on the entry-level M2 Mac mini. On those Macs, connect over USB-C or use software dimming.
MonitorControl is MIT licensed and maintained on GitHub by waydabber, who also makes BetterDisplay. Accessibility permission is only needed if you want to use the Apple keyboard keys. Version 4 runs on macOS 10.15 with some limits and fully on macOS 11 Big Sur or later. On macOS Tahoe the native on-screen display is only partly supported.
Frequently asked questions
Is MonitorControl free?
Yes. MonitorControl is completely free, with no paid tier.
Is MonitorControl safe and open source?
MonitorControl is open source under the MIT licence, with the code on GitHub. Download it from the GitHub releases page or Homebrew. It only needs Accessibility permission if you want the Apple brightness and media keys to control your monitor.
How do I install MonitorControl?
Download the latest dmg from GitHub releases and copy MonitorControl to Applications, or run brew install --cask monitorcontrol. Open it, grant Accessibility when asked if you want keyboard control, then use the brightness icon in the menu bar.
What macOS version does MonitorControl need?
Version 4 supports macOS 10.15 Catalina with some limits and works fully on macOS 11 Big Sur or later. macOS 27 needs version 4.4.0 or newer. Older versions exist for Mojave (3.1.1) and Sierra (2.1.0). It supports Apple silicon Macs.
How does MonitorControl compare to BetterDisplay and Lunar?
MonitorControl covers brightness, contrast and volume for free. Its own README points to BetterDisplay, made by the same maintainer, for XDR and HDR brightness upscaling, support for more Macs and displays, and DDC over HDMI on Macs where MonitorControl cannot use it. Lunar is another display app, made by a developer who contributed Apple silicon DDC support to MonitorControl.
Why can't MonitorControl change my monitor's brightness?
Check the connection first. DDC does not work through the built-in HDMI port on the 2018 Intel Mac mini, M1 Macs and the entry-level M2 Mac mini, or through DisplayLink docks. Some displays, notably EIZO, use their own protocol. In these cases MonitorControl can still dim the picture in software.
