Gitify
Free GitHub notifications app for Mac that keeps GitHub, GitLab and Gitea alerts in your menu bar.
Gitify is a menu bar app that shows your Git notifications on the Mac. It started with GitHub and now also reads notifications from GitLab, Gitea, Forgejo, Codeberg and Bitbucket Cloud.
Click the menu bar icon to see unread items for each account. You can mark a notification as read or done, or unsubscribe from a thread, without opening a browser tab. Filters narrow the list by reason, repository or account. Inside the window, single keys get you around: r refreshes, f opens Filters, s opens Settings and q quits. A global shortcut to show or hide Gitify can be set in Settings under System.
You can sign in to several accounts at once, including GitHub Enterprise Server and self-managed GitLab. On github.com you use Login with GitHub. Other hosts use a personal access token or an OAuth app, and Bitbucket uses an app password. Optional system notifications and a sound tell you when something new arrives, and the Appearance settings offer a Classic or Glass design, themes and zoom.
Gitify is free and released under the MIT licence. The Mac download is a universal build for Apple Silicon and Intel, and the Homebrew cask needs macOS 13 or later. The app checks for updates at launch and every 24 hours. It suits developers and maintainers who follow many repositories and want to keep up without living in their inbox.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gitify free?
Yes. Gitify is free to download from gitify.io and from GitHub, and there is no paid tier. It is released under the MIT licence.
Is Gitify safe and open source?
Gitify is open source, and its code is public on GitHub under gitify-app/gitify. It only talks to the forges you sign in to. A classic GitHub token needs the notifications, read:user and repo scopes, or public_repo if you only care about public repositories.
How do I install Gitify?
Download the universal .dmg from gitify.io and drag Gitify to Applications, or run brew install --cask gitify in Terminal. Open it from the menu bar and add your first account.
What macOS version does Gitify need?
The Homebrew cask requires macOS 13 Ventura or later. The same build runs natively on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
Does Gitify work with GitLab and GitHub Enterprise?
Yes. It supports GitHub.com, GitHub Enterprise Server, GitHub Enterprise Cloud with data residency, GitLab Cloud and self-managed GitLab, Gitea, Forgejo, Codeberg and Bitbucket Cloud. Some actions, such as mark as done or unsubscribe, are not available on every forge.
How do I make Gitify open at login?
Turn on Open at startup in Settings under System. In the same section you can turn on system notifications, pick a sound and set the global show and hide shortcut.
